History
of Education
Leading
UK educationalist, Michael Barber poses further questions;
How will people find security, which is a universal human
need, in a world of short-term jobs and bewildering rapid
change? How will the poorly equipped come to grips with the
intricacies of modern life without knowing what makes 'life'
tick? How can they plot and plan for life's future with no
knowledge of its past, viewed through history? And if worthwhile
employment is becoming something for the young at the expense
of older - and there are talented, experienced people of forty-five
who believe they may never work again - how will they occupy
the rest of their lives? These are the needs that hopefully,
a good grasp of knowledge, will satisfy as we strive for the
answers.
Awesome
At last we have begun to understand the
problems of the global environment more clearly. We have identified
the holes in the ozone layer, the destruction of the rain
forests and the sensitive ecological 'seesaw'. We are spreading
the word to alert the world's inhabitants of the dangers pending.
These problems present a set of challenges more awesome than
any in human history. In the past we have endured disease,
famine and war, believing they were beyond the scope of human
control. They were considered acts of God. But in the past
fifty years a different view has formed. We now recognise
that the solution to most of these problems lays fairly and
squarely with the human race.
Destiny
Any well-balanced and caring society is
duty-bound to ensure its members are prepared for the monumental
responsibility now faced. The current generation cannot pass
the buck. It is our destiny to inherit a unique combination
of unparalleled power and terrible responsibility. More than
75 years ago, the author of THE TIME MACHINE, H.
G. Wells, wrote: 'Human history becomes more and more a race
between education and catastrophe'. We must ensure that education
ends up the winner.
